There is a store advertising “Haitian products”, and the people around are still almost all black and likely many are West Indian. There is also a Kennedy Fried Chicken, a cleaners, and delis.
The area looks pretty rough, but not too bad. The housing seems to be mostly 4-6 story brick apartment buildings. There are a surprising number of businesses with their shutters down for 3 p.m. on a weekday, but there are still a fair number of people walking around.
In: This station is similar to Newkirk, except for at the very end of the platform, there are large rectangular tiles with Beverly Rd. in black painted letters (similar to the R stops in Brooklyn ). Otherwise, there is reddish-purple trim at the top of the walls and tile mosaic “B” on a blue and purple background; there’s also the tile mosaic “Beverly Rd. ” on the same background with mauve trim. Looks good.
